What is it? It is a device that monitors the baby's heart rate during pregnancy. Very often a pregnant mother cannot always feel a baby's movements inside her, giving rise to considerable anxiety. This little baby gadget can help reassure the mother that all is fine.
What does it consist of? It consists of several parts:
- 2-MHz probe
- Monitor unit with LCD display, loudspeakers and audio output (for use with earphones)
- Ultrasound gel
- Carry bag
How do you use it? It is very simple to use. You first apply the gel to the abomen below the belly button, then move the probe around slowly (you may need to adjust the angle of the probe a little), and finally stop moving when you hear the thumping sounds of the heart beats. Note that a baby is likely to have a heart rate of 120 per minute or more. If you hear a rate of 100 or less, it is most likely that you have detected your own heart rate.
How does it work? It works by making use of the Doppler effect: it transmits small, high frequency sound waves (ultrasound) and then listens to the reflections. The frequency of the reflected waves is changed slightly when these waves are reflected from a moving object i.e. the fetal heart. The monitor processes this all this information, outputs the sounds on the speakers and displays the heart rate on the LCD.
The Hi Bebe BT-200 Fetal Heart Rate Monitor has received a large number of enthusiastic reviews. With this gadget, it helps reassure the pregnant woman that the baby inside is doing fine. It is no longer necessary to wait a few weeks to go to a doctor's office to listen to the baby's heart beat!
